PHD INTERN (Monetary Policy and Research Department)

In this role, you will study the key drivers of Finland’s long-term economic growth. You will contribute to developing and formalising the theoretical framework of the Bank of Finland’s long-term empirical forecasting model. The model focuses particularly on economic growth from the perspectives of human and physical capital. You will also act as a co-author on a scientific article based on the project, with the goal of publication in a peer-reviewed journal.

You will work as part of a team consisting of research-oriented economists in the Bank of Finland’s Monetary Policy and Research Department. Team members will guide your work.

The PhD internship is a fixed-term position of up to three months, scheduled for autumn 2026. Salary: EUR 2,279 per month

From you, we expect:

  • Right to pursue doctoral studies in economics or a related quantitative field (e.g. finance, statistics)
  • Strong, proven knowledge of economic growth theory (including endogenous growth theory) and macroeconomics, and genuine interest in these areas
  • Skills and experience in theoretical modelling
  • Ability to work both collaboratively and independently in research
  • Excellent English skills (written and spoken)
  • Demonstrated ability to produce clear and well-structured research writing

We also value:

  • Experience in handling empirical macroeconomic data
  • Experience with empirical macroeconomic models and/or growth decompositions
  • Strong quantitative skills (e.g. econometrics, statistical analysis) and programming skills (e.g. R, Python, Matlab)
  • A proactive and solution-oriented approach
